UPDATE: Tumblr didn't work

mood: ACK! · working on: tumblr importing

So, I tried using a plugin called vag_tumblr_import to automatically route all tumblr posts to my blog, and it semi-worked. Here’s what didn’t:

Categories:

The plugin, when activated, created a tumblr category, with media-titled subcategories (photo, quote, &c) This is not in itself terrible, but royally messes with my organization. I show a category listing in my footer, and have filters in my CMS that display certain categories of posts (e.g. meta or musings).

I’d have to tweak the plugin code to not use the secondary category, and add posts to my already-created categories.

Titles:

Untitled tumblr posts get a default title slapped on them, and it’s ugly. This could potentially be avoided if I always use a title for my posts, but I’d have to retroactively add titles to things.

Sections:

Tumblr posts are automatically either added to the “about” or “article” section. The former royally screwed with my website, and the latter doesn’t exist (I use a section called “articles.” COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.) I could probably change that in the plugin code, though.

Images:

If I implement this, I need to figure out a way to automatically create a slimbox gallery and add the images to it (or simply resize them, but that doesn’t look as nice). Images / photoblogging is the hardest thing to automate with TextPattern, so I need to do more research in this area.

Tags:

Tumblr doesn’t import tags at all. This makes sense, as tags aren’t exactly a feature in vanilla TextPattern, but are made available through the tru_tags plugin. I’d probably have to write this code from scratch if I wanted to use tagging with tumblr.

Sunday 4:00 am

mood: ...

Sunday morning. 4:00 am. The spring rains are beating down the world outside, and the sound of the fan is ever present. It struggles against the breeze, trying as hard as it can to pull the cool air inside, cool down this ingot of heat and steam.

Full of hot air in here.

Rent lies unpaid, two months late. Bills come like letters from ex girlfriends, their pleas unread. Perhaps someday we can live this bourgeois dream, but not today. Not at 4:00 am on a Sunday morning, when thunderstorms rend the dark.

This siberian exile is quickly turning out to be too muggy. Lots of flies, swamp water, stagnant and reeking. Treading water, not exactly keeping my head above the surface, but at least not drowning. There are no life preservers in this lagoon.

Perhaps a change of scenery is in order?

Maybe it’s too early to settle down and start a family. Maybe the great maguffin up in the sky is telling me to abandon this bourgeois nightmare for a while, try something else, get out of my ‘comfort zone.’ What else is there?

Wandering minstrels, vagabonds, traveling mushroom circuses. They’re doing it. They’re roaming the country, living within the Code. But they’re searching for themselves. They’re trying to recapture the lost art of the bohemian, the elusive and vaporous cigarette smoke that marks the passing of time. Another spent life. Another bum on the curb. This is not society.

But, how do you reconcile society, in its greatest sense, with the wandering vagabond? Can they only exist as two ideals, separated by time and place? Can a bridge be built? Or does one have to push themselves into it with all of their soul, consuming it and re-birthing it a hundred times, until they find a home? You can either have one, or the other (at a time), but try for both and you’ll be rent in two.

4:00 am on a Sunday morning, but it could be any time and date, any place. Any weather. The days flow into each other like dull mercury, sliding down wrinkles in my hands and spreading silver drops on the floor. This is what life is like without purpose. Without a firm schedule of striving, for either the bourgeois dream or another. This is treading water, through a swamp. And it’s so dark in this lagoon.

Is this Twitter thing going to work?

mood: irritable · working on: php

I’ve been working for at least five hours on this…

Almost done!

mood: energetic! · working on: sidebar! sidebar! sidebar!

Well, I’ve been working for a few hours (read: almost 17 hours straight) on this website, but it’s coming together nicely. The only thing I have left to do is get that sidebar worked out. Feel free to browse around. Tell me if something breaks.

One Address Book to rule them all

working on: contacts and website

Ok, so here’s what I’m going to do. I need to make some kind of solution to this whole “multiple contact databases” thing. Here is where I have contacts so far:

  • Gmail
  • nelson@yoshokatana.com (Google Apps)
  • RIT (Google Apps)
  • Facebook
  • Skype
  • AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo(?) in Adium
  • Laptop Contacts / Mail.app
  • Other social networks(?)
  • Phone – separate system, not sure how to integrate (see below)

How to Integrate Phone

Option 1: Nexus One Droid Incredible (or other Verizon + Android Phone)
PROS: fast, shiny, slick phone, integrates with google address books and GVoice(important), replaces my phone
CONS: Expensive, haven’t used Android before, would have to sync everything to Google (not as hard as it was before, but would require EFFORT)

Option 2: iPhone v4
PROS: really simple syncing with mac, I can sync contacts through OSX to phone and over air
CONS: BLOODY EXPENSIVE, no contract, unlocking etc is a pain, doesn’t work with Verizon

Option 3: Shitty phone + iTouch
PROS: Free solution, already have both, can start using awesome iTouch productivity apps like Things, etc
CONS: “Phonebook” paradigm (have to consult iTouch before making any calls), no GVoice support, have to carry two things

NOTE: I am currently using this, and not really making outbound calls on my phone. Inbound calls go to GVoice number, then route to my phone.

Option 4: Android Phone + iTouch
PROS: Can start with option 3, then phase in new phone as I get money, android and such are awesome
CONS: will have to switch soon, android is still untested

Still in Progress

working on: website

Sorry that the website isn’t super spiffy yet. I’m still working on the sidebar, and trying to integrate TextPattern and ZenPhoto. So far, my attempts have been unsuccessful.
